Hieroglyphics was essentially a pictographic alphabet. For some time, it was believed that they were nothing more than primitive cave drawings. But in 1799, a chunk of etched stone forever changed pre-existing assumptions. What would come to be known as "The Rosetta Stone" was a tri-lingual tablet that was used somewhat as a decoder ring. With the Rosetta Stone in hand, scholars were at last able to decipher the mysteries of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.
