Jane Austen Gifts The famous writer was born December 16, 1775. Somewhat like the von Trapp family, the Austens would put on little plays, mostly comedies. Some scholars posit that that is how Jane developed her satirical writing style. At the age of 21, Jane Austen fell into what some cynics would refer to as 'a well of despair,' a.k.a. she fell in love, but because neither her nor the lad’s family was wealthy, they were kept apart, and she never saw him again. Jane’s first published novel was Sense and Sensibility. She would go on to pen Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma, among others. Though she passed away on July 18, 1817, her work lives on in high school classrooms, college auditoriums, and in both well and poorly made films.
