 | Sigmund Freud Gifts The man who said the famous words, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,” was actually born Shlomo Sigismund Freud. He was the first of seven children, and because of his precocity, he was favored by his parents. They sacrificed everything to give him a proper education, and it paid off: Sigmund was able to attend Leopoldstädter Kommunal-Realgymnasium, a very prominent high school, where he graduated with honors. He attended medical school after that where he became very interested in psychodynamics. He received his M.D. in 1881. Freud is most known for his theories of repression and the unconscious mind, as well as sexual desire. In fact, he’s more popular for what he’s said about sex than anything else. (Leave it to the modern age to focus on that taboo…) Freud was also technically a drug-peddler, only in the sense that he often prescribed cocaine to remedy various ailments. He died at age 83 from heart failure, and an overdose of morphine.
