 | Charles Darwin Gifts You’ve seen those bumper stickers with the silver lines twisting until you recognize a fish. This has become the symbol for Darwinism. The man behind the theory of natural selection was born Charles Robert Darwin on February 12, 1809. He was born into a wealthy family, and at the young age of sixteen, Charles was already acting as an apprentice to his father, who was a doctor, helping treat the poor during his summer vacation (how many kids would volunteer to do that?). That autumn, he attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland to study medicine, but he found himself disgusted by the barbarity of surgery, and gave up on his studies. In his second year at university, he joined a student club interested in natural history. It was there when the seed was planted. Charles was a pupil of Robert Edmund Grant, and joined him on his excursions to research marine animals. He was very bright for his age, and he went on to give presentations about his own theories, in addition to editing other works and contributing pieces for articles. The non-stop working got to his heart, and he developed stress palpitations. But he kept on working, and eventually ended up on his back with all sorts of bodily ailment s. In June, 1838, he finally took a break and vacationed in Scotland. He came back, fully recuperated and ready for more theory. He died on April 19, 1882. His ground-breaking piece was The Origin of Species, and it is still taught in schools and institutions today.

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”
“The very essence of instinct is that it's followed independently of reason.”
“We must, however, acknowledge, as it seems to me, that man with all his noble qualities... still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin.” |
