 | Johannes Brahms Gifts Johannes Brahms was a German composer of the Romantic period. He was born on May 7, 1833, and seven years later, he began learning how to play the piano. His father was proficient with several instruments. It was he who introduced his son to the instrument that he would master. Brahms apprenticed to a few teachers, but it wasn’t until he had reached nineteen years of age that he had his first concert tour. He was a big fan of nature, and when he wasn’t behind a piano, he was strolling through the woods. Perhaps it’s because he was a musical genius, but people seemed to feel a chill around him, as though he thought himself to be superior. In truth, he was a very nice gentleman, often carrying candy with him on his walks, and handing it out to the passing children. Aside from his reputation as a grouchy and exclusive man, Brahms pushed on and wrote various pieces, including two serenades, two piano concertos, two orchestral overtures, and four symphonies. It was a miracle that any of his works made it past his perfectionist editing, as he was known to tear up early drafts and rewrite them until they were absolutely flawless. He died on April 3, 1897.

“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.”
“Those who enjoy their own emotionally bad health and who habitually fill their own minds with the rank poisons of suspicion, jealousy and hatred, as a rule take umbrage at those who refuse to do likewise, and they find a perverted relief in trying to denigrate them.”
“What would become of all historical biography if it was written only with consideration for other peoples’ feelings?” |
