 | Ben Franklin Gifts This gentleman is ¼ of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. He got into the printing industry through his older brother and became a printer and newspaper editor in Philadelphia, a job that kept him quite wealthy. Franklin was very interested in technology and went on to invent such thing as bifocal glasses, the lightning rod, the glass harmonica, the Franklin stove, and the urinary catheter. He gained international renown for his many experiments. He played a pivotal role in establishing the University of Pennsylvania, the Franklin & Marshall College, and was elected the first president of the American Philosophical Society. On top of that, he formed the first public lending library in America, and the first fire department in Pennsylvania. There was nothing this guy couldn’t do. He passed away on April 17, 1790, but not a day goes by when one of his inventions or institutions isn’t utilized.
